Celtic have at this stage got 16 midfielders according to the clubs official site. So how many of these players have a realistic future at Parkhead? That is to say after a season of chasing shadows from a European campaign that never was, who can take us to the next level.
Derk Boerrigter is the biggest waste of 3 million pounds ever conceived. His sicknote should be revoked. Stefan Johansen whilst the player of the year last year is well below those standards this term. If he were any nationality other than Norwegian you would have thought the £5 million Aston Villa were willing to pay would have been taken. Time to sell Johansen and cut Boerrigter.
Potential off the Radar!
Gary Mackay Stevens is yet to play his best football in Hoops. The potential is there and the manager believes in him, he keeps being selected. It is time for him to nail down his position or move down the pecking order. Patrick Roberts who Manchester City paid £12 million for is increasingly staking his claim for a starting berth. His performances for the youths and his cameo last start have Hoops fans smiling about a snappy piece of business done by the club. We will never buy a player at his valuation, time to see what he can do.
Ryan Christie has been tormenting the Premiership for years with his guile and now we finally have the opportunity to see him in Hoops. Get him selected Ronny. Scott Allan is the forgotten Bhoy at Paradise, it is time for him to be given an extended run in the team, his potential is clear, let’s get him firing so he can sink the Shame next term. Stuart Armstrong like GMS is yet to play his best football for Celtic. Again, like Gary, i believe that the potential is there but the same as his former Terrors teammate it is time to show the potential that had him signed in the first place. Kristoffer Ajer is yet to play for Celtic, let us hope he comes from Start injury free and ready to stake his claim.
Nir Biton has been linked with a 10 million pound move to the EPL. If we do not qualify for Europe next season, expect to wave him goodbye. Scott Brown‘s return from injury has been timely, the skipper is an inspiring and influential leader and we need Broony to stand tall in the run in. Kris Commons is one of my all time favourite players, I have no idea why he isn’t the first player selected when healthy. He is under utilised under Deila, WBA reportedly offered £8 million for him and we turned that down to keep him on the bench.
The Jury is out
Liam Henderson who is currently at Hibs on loan needs a big finish to the season. He looks a way below Celtic’s standards. That said, he could return with a League Cup winners medal and a Championship medal as well. Lets hope he realises his potential or a summer move to Hibs might be his best option. Callum McGregor finds himself out of the first team after an alleged drink driving incident. If he gets more game time this season is uncertain, he must surely be a few players down the pecking order.
Tom Rogic has been in good form this year and may have rescued his Celtic career after a terrible time with injuries. Rogic must take his undoubted skill and class in attack and back it up defensively. A common criticism is that he loses out in midfield far too often. Joe Thomson is essentially a youth player on the cusp. He has done nothing wrong and with continued good performances for the development team gives himself every chance.
Thanks for your service.
James Forrest has rejected a new contract and will be likely sold in the summer. Thanks for everything James, who will ever forget Shaktar Karagandy! Whilst sad to see him go, he has been injury prone and a bench player this year. This is far from a hammer blow to our first team.
So Celtic with midfielders a plenty have some tough decisions to make, who to move on and who to select. One things for sure, we don’t need anymore.
